Thetford Voices Go for Gold on 26 March!

Children from three Junior schools celebrated the Olympics in a Thetford Voices Singing Workshop held on Monday 26 March.

The Workshop was based around three original songs written by local song leader John Weeks. First the Olympic Torch Relay was celebrated by a song appropriately sung as a round, each part following on in relay after the other. We then learnt the folk-style 'Sing Hey-Ho', based on the surprising history of the modern Olympic Games with its Victorian origins in the little Shropshire village of Much Wenlock, and dramatised the early verses with mime of things like football, tilting with lances and blindfold wheelbarrow racing, which all took their place in the 1860s side by side with foot races.

Christmas Carol Workshop, Dec 20-21st

John Weeks gives his report on Thetford Voices' most recent outing..

With twenty of the Singing Group taking part, as well as Charlotte Jeffries on ukelele and former tutors Sophie Goveia (violin), Mary Barclay (harp) and Jonathan Settle (guitar) in the band and Melanie, Natalie, Polina and John helping out, Thetford Music Project was once more at the heart of one of the townʼs regular Christmas delights.

Sixty five children and adults crowded into the lounge of Hanbury Court alongside residents on the Tuesday evening before Christmas to sing carols and keep a by now traditional appointment with a rubicund ancient. ʻMust be Santaʼ they sang, more tunefully than Bob Dylan, since they were fifty 6-14 year old Thetford Voices, joined by adult team leaders, accompanied by student musicians playing violin, harp, guitar and ukelele and taking part in their fourth Workshop and Carolling Tour.

Thetford Voices

Thetford Voices is the self-funding, vocal outreach programme of Thetford Music Project (charity number 1121851).

In our fifth year, we have established a well-supported programme of subsidised holiday singing workshops. We also promote singing collaborations between schools across the town. We have grown with the generous support of local and national funders.

Our next workshop is Christmas Carolling on Tuesday 20, Wednesday 21 December - details to follow.

Below are reports of events in the last two years.

The Summer of 2011

Thetford Voices has had a great summer with two courses attracting some lively spirits.

On Sunday 26th June 30 singers and leaders were involved in a day’s workshop: Songs in the Garden.

Meeting in the morning in the Music Room of 23 Bridge Street, we learnt and practised a number of songs with a garden theme, from the well-known ‘English Country Gardens’ to a ditty about a chomping caterpillar and the jazzily addictive ‘The Orchard Green’.

After a lunch-time picnic, we embarked on a tour of four of the gardens taking part in Thetford’s Open Gardens.

Christmas Cheer

Sixteen  of the TMP Singing Group were at the heart of  the 43 strong choir gathered for  Thetford Voices’ Carolling Workshop this Christmas while Jon Settle on guitar and former TMP tutors Sophie Goveia (violin) and  Mary Barclay ( harp) formed 3/5ths of the accompanying band.

There were warm greetings on chilly days before Christmas when the young singers of Thetford Voices brought carols and Christmas songs to local residents for the third consecutive year.

Over fifty singers and musicians - 6-14 year olds in the main - met for a half-day rehearsal in the Grammar School on Tuesday December 21st before embarking on a tour of the town which began with a tea-time concert for the residents of Hanbury Court.

50  children, ten songs to sing, act out and move to, one and a half days for rehearsal and a forty-five minute concert: last week the formula for a Thetford Voices Singers’ Workshop once again produced a great holiday experience and a really enjoyable evening’s entertainment.

The children, 6-15 year olds from Thetford and beyond, met in the Williamson Hall of Thetford Grammar School to learn and perform (as the course title promised) some Marvellous Songs. They celebrated the wonders of nature from hot summer days to the autumn migration. They saluted the amazing achievement of the artist M.C.Escher, the resourcefulness of the men and women who sailed the Norfoilk Wherries and the derring-do of Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines. They told the tall tales of the enormous Norfolk Turnippe and the Emperor’s New Clothes. And all this to catchy, compelling music, delivered with energy, commitment and a great sense of fun.
